Physiotherapy for people living with dementia

Familiar surroundings. A person-centred approach.

Understand the person and their daily routine.

For someone living with dementia, changes in movement can affect familiar activities and confidence. Physiotherapy focuses on their physical needs while allowing time for communication and responses. We consider what is meaningful to the person, their usual routine and how an agreed plan can fit into the support they receive.

Who is dementia-related physiotherapy for?

  • People living with dementia whose physical movement or mobility has changed.
  • People needing support with walking, balance or everyday activities.
  • Families or carers seeking a movement plan adapted to the person’s routine and communication needs.

How physiotherapy can help

  • Assess physical difficulties affecting walking, balance and everyday movement.
  • Adapt explanations and activities to the person's communication and support needs.
  • Discuss suitable movement practice and appropriate support from familiar people.

What happens during a visit?

We learn about the person's usual abilities, interests and any recent changes before assessing movement at an appropriate pace. Familiar activities and surroundings can help guide the visit. We involve the person as much as possible and discuss consent or appropriate decision-making arrangements, alongside any agreed family, carer or care-team involvement.

Your physiotherapist will explain if another service or further assessment would be more appropriate.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about the person’s familiar routine, preferred time and communication needs.
  • Have usual mobility aids and care guidance ready; discuss consent and whether a familiar person should be present.

Questions about this care

Can I arrange a visit for a relative?

You can contact us about their needs. We discuss their involvement, consent and any appropriate decision-making arrangements before the visit, alongside the support already in place. A diagnosis of dementia does not automatically mean a person cannot make a treatment decision.

Can a familiar person take part?

Where appropriate and agreed, a relative or carer can help us understand the person's routine and support communication. We still involve the person themselves and discuss the role of anyone attending.

Can physiotherapy prevent every fall?

No. Falls can have several causes. Assessment can help identify relevant movement difficulties and discuss appropriate support, but it cannot guarantee that a fall will not happen or replace wider medical and care assessment.

Arrange the right home care.

Tell us about the care needed. We check suitability and visit arrangements before confirming an appointment. No payment is taken for a request.
