Assess the respiratory need before choosing an approach.
Respiratory physiotherapy is not one exercise programme for everyone. We discuss your symptoms, diagnosis and medical guidance to understand whether airway-clearance advice, breathing work or rehabilitation is appropriate. The visit focuses on an individual plan that you understand and can use alongside the rest of your care.
Who is planned chest physiotherapy for?
- People whose medically assessed respiratory condition may benefit from physiotherapy.
- People seeking appropriate airway-clearance advice or respiratory rehabilitation.
- People with relevant rehabilitation needs after respiratory illness or surgery.
How physiotherapy can help
- Assess relevant breathing difficulties and respiratory rehabilitation needs.
- Discuss suitable airway-clearance or breathing approaches where indicated.
- Explain an individual plan and how it relates to your existing medical advice.
What happens during a visit?
We discuss your respiratory history, current symptoms, medication and any recent treatment or surgery. Assessment and the proposed approach depend on your condition and current health. Your physiotherapist explains any suitable techniques and checks your understanding. If medical review or another service is needed, we explain that rather than treating a home visit as a substitute.
Your physiotherapist will explain if another service or further assessment would be more appropriate.
Before we arrive
- Share your diagnosis and existing medical advice; have your medication list and any prescribed respiratory equipment available.
- Tell us about recent symptom changes so suitability can be reviewed before a visit. This is planned care, not an urgent breathing service.
Paying for your home visit
- Self-pay
- Our standard home visit is £160 for 60 minutes. Check the visit details and payment policy before confirming.
- Health cash plans
- You pay for the visit and receive a paid itemised invoice. Check your plan’s home-visit cover, limits and claim requirements before booking.
- Private medical insurance
- Confirm that your insurer authorises home physiotherapy with the clinician providing your care. Recognition for clinic treatment does not automatically cover a home visit. Your policy may include an excess or shortfall.
Questions about this care
Is this an urgent breathing service?
No. Severe breathing difficulty, such as gasping or being unable to speak, needs 999. If you are more breathless than usual, contact NHS 111. Do not wait for a physiotherapy appointment.
What if my breathing problem has not been assessed medically?
Seek medical advice for new or unexplained breathlessness rather than trying to diagnose it yourself. Tell us what medical assessment you have had so we can discuss whether planned respiratory physiotherapy is suitable.
Will I need a particular device?
Not everyone needs an airway-clearance device. We assess your needs before discussing any options. If you already have prescribed equipment, have it available and share the instructions from your care team.
